When most people celebrate their 101st birthday, they’re simply happy to be surrounded by loved ones. But Lela McSpadden had something else in mind—she wanted to dance. And that’s exactly what the St. Louis centenarian did, rising from her seat without any prompting and moving to the music as her birthday party erupted in applause and cheers.
The spontaneous dance performance wasn’t just a memorable moment for her family—it was a glimpse into the spirit that has carried McSpadden through more than a century of life. Her secret? A simple combination of faith, self-care, and surrounding herself with people who bring joy.
A lifetime of caring for others
McSpadden’s journey began in 1925, and she dedicated her professional life to nursing. But for her, caring for others wasn’t merely an occupation—it became a defining characteristic that has persisted long after retirement.
Rev. Renee Johnson, McSpadden’s great-niece who serves as pastor at Murchison Tabernacle Church, described her enduring nature: “She has always been a nurturer. She’s been retired for many years, but she continues to show love and support whenever we have any health concerns.”
Her niece Toni Murphy shared an amusing observation about McSpadden’s persistent caretaking instincts: “If you’re getting ready to stand up, she’s already right there. You think it would be the other way around, but she’s always trying to take care of everyone else.”
The secret to longevity
When asked about her remarkable longevity, McSpadden’s answer is refreshingly straightforward: “Take care of yourself, keep your faith strong, and stay around people who make you laugh.” There are no elaborate wellness protocols or trendy superfoods in her formula—just fundamental principles refined over a hundred years of living.
Faith forms the foundation of her daily routine. Each morning begins with prayer before she heads to the Northside Youth and Senior Service Center, where she participates in exercise classes, engages in games, and socializes with friends. The center honored her milestone by officially designating her birthday as “Lela McSpadden Day.”
Family traditions and staying active
McSpadden’s connection to faith runs deep in her family history. Her mother was among the founders of Murchison Tabernacle Church, the same congregation where her great-niece now serves as pastor.
Weekly domino games have become a cherished family ritual. Her niece Peggy Joyner explained: “We all play dominoes every Friday. We’ve been doing it for many years. She’s alert and she never wants to stop. We just have a good time.” The gatherings feature popcorn, chips, soda, and abundant laughter.
McSpadden’s enthusiasm for participation hasn’t diminished with age. Rev. Johnson noted her great-aunt’s eagerness to be included: “She gets up, she’s ready to go, waiting for the van to pick her up. She never wants to be excluded from any of the activities and events.”
A life well lived
At her birthday celebration, surrounded by family and community, McSpadden demonstrated that vitality isn’t measured solely in years but in presence, engagement, and joy. Her impromptu dance became a testament to a life built on prayer, service, and genuine connections with others.
