When Jamey Carrington rolls into a room in his wheelchair, many people immediately notice his physical limitations caused by Spinal Muscular Atrophy. What they don’t expect is the powerful message of hope and purpose that flows from this eighteen-year-old’s testimony—one that has nothing to do with what his body can or cannot do.

The story actually begins before Jamey was even conceived. His mother experienced what she believed was a divine prompting, asking whether she would accept the responsibility of raising a “special son.” She answered affirmatively, though the full weight of that moment wouldn’t become clear for years.

A forgotten promise remembered

When Jamey’s sister arrived first—a healthy baby girl—his mother naturally assumed the earlier spiritual conversation had been resolved. Seven years passed without incident. Then Jamey was born, and doctors delivered the diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Suddenly, that long-ago promise came rushing back with stunning clarity.

The family faced a complete upheaval as they adjusted to a new reality filled with medical challenges and daily care needs that most parents never have to consider.

Living with severe physical limitations

Jamey’s condition means he has never experienced the simple act of walking. Basic tasks that most people perform without thought—eating, dressing, moving independently—remain beyond his physical capability. He has spent his entire life observing others accomplish with ease what remains impossible for him.

The emotional toll proved as challenging as the physical limitations. Jamey describes sinking into isolation, consumed by loneliness and resentment. His bedroom became a refuge from a world that seemed to have no place for him, and he envisioned a future defined entirely by confinement and disappointment.

An encounter that changed everything

The turning point came through a spiritual encounter that fundamentally altered Jamey’s perspective. He recalls receiving a specific message: “You don’t have to have working legs, but you can help other people run even if you can’t walk.”

That single thought shattered the prison of self-pity he had constructed. Rather than fixating on his body’s failures, Jamey began considering what could be accomplished through him despite those limitations.

Today, Jamey actively travels to share his experiences with audiences who need to hear that circumstances don’t define destiny. He has discovered contentment not by waiting for physical healing, but by finding meaning in his current state. As he explains it: “I love life, because I love Jesus.”

His journey demonstrates that human value isn’t determined by physical ability or what society considers normal. Instead, purpose can emerge from the most unlikely places when perspective shifts from what we lack to what remains possible through faith.
