(Matthew 5:16, NIV) – “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

The words of Jesus remind us that light is meant for a purpose—it shines, revealing what would otherwise remain hidden. When Jesus calls us the “light of the world,” He is entrusting us with a holy responsibility to live in a way that reflects His love and truth. It is not our light we reflect, but His, just as the moon reflects the light of the sun.

To shine as lights in the world, our lives must point to God’s glory. This happens not in grandiose displays but often in the ordinary rhythm of daily life—kind words spoken to a friend, generosity extended to a stranger, or steadfast integrity in challenging situations. Each of these actions has the power to illuminate Christ’s presence in a way the world cannot ignore. Jesus’ light in us is transformative, not for our recognition, but so others might recognize the Father’s glory.

Our role as His lights carries both privilege and responsibility. Privilege, because we are chosen to reflect Jesus’ goodness; responsibility, because this light is meant to be visible to others, like a city on a hill. We are not called to hide it under fear or complacency. The light needs to shine wherever darkness remains—in places of brokenness, pain, and sin. In this way, our lives become living testimonies that God’s renewing work is active in the world.

Let us also remember, however, that we do not shine by our own strength. Just as we cannot manufacture sunlight, we cannot manufacture a light that glorifies God. Only through abiding in Christ, the true Light of the World, are we empowered to live in a way that draws others to God. When our lives center around Him, His radiance shines through us.

How is God calling you to shine His light today? Perhaps through a single act of compassion or a choice to stand for truth in love—wherever He places you, allow Christ’s light to overflow through you, bringing hope and pointing others to God.

Let us pray.

Father of lights, thank You for calling us to reflect Your love and truth in a darkened world. Help us to abide in You, so Your light shines through us in ways that draw others to You. Strengthen us to live boldly and faithfully, always pointing to Your glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
