A devastating plane crash involving Jeju Air flight 7C2216 has left at least 177 people dead, as the aircraft met with disaster upon landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea. The flight, which originated from Bangkok, Thailand, attempted to touch down shortly after 09:00 local time (00:00 GMT) when it skidded along the runway, collided with a wall, and erupted into flames.

Among the 181 passengers on board, the majority were South Korean nationals, with only two Thai individuals confirmed among them. Remarkably, two crew members survived the crash and have been hospitalized for their injuries.

In response to the tragedy, Rev Kim Jong-hyeok, Chairman of the National Council of Churches in Korea, expressed his sorrow and extended condolences to those affected. He called on the public to pray for the victims’ families and the injured, saying, “We pray for God’s great comfort for the bereaved families and the injured who have suffered great sorrow due to this accident.”

He further urged churches and authorities to collaborate in addressing the aftermath and preventing future incidents: “We urge churches across the country to pray together and the government and relevant officials to quickly handle the accident and come up with measures to prevent a recurrence.”

International condolences also poured in, with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy sharing his sadness. On the social media platform X, he stated, “My heartfelt condolences go out to the people of South Korea and Thailand, and all those that have lost loved ones.”

Boeing, the manufacturer of the Boeing 737-800 involved in the crash, pledged its support to Jeju Air, stating, “We are in contact with Jeju Air regarding flight 2216 and stand ready to support them. We extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones, and our thoughts remain with the passengers and crew.”

Jeju Air released a statement expressing regret and promising efforts to address the incident’s consequences: “We deeply apologize to all those affected by the incident. We will make every effort to resolve the situation. We sincerely regret the distress caused.”
