In the bustling checkout lanes of a Stillwater grocery store, a simple act of generosity has sparked a nationwide wave of appreciation. While most shoppers barely notice the person ringing up their purchases, one cashier’s decision to step in during a customer’s moment of distress has reminded countless people about the power of compassion.
Brent Cabahug, who has been working at the local store since relocating from the Philippines in September 2023, demonstrated an extraordinary level of empathy when he encountered an elderly woman facing a stressful situation at his register last Tuesday. The woman’s credit card repeatedly declined, creating an uncomfortable moment that many shoppers would prefer to ignore.
A quiet gesture that spoke volumes
Rather than following standard protocol or waiting for management intervention, Brent made an immediate decision. He stepped away from his position behind the counter and used his own money to cover the woman’s grocery bill. The gesture was made without fanfare or expectation of recognition.
Dani Dircks, who was waiting several positions back in line with her daughter Sailor, witnessed the entire interaction. She observed how Brent handled the situation with complete discretion and genuine care.
“I watched this cashier, knowing nothing about him, walk around, knowing nothing about that lady, and he didn’t care,” Dani said.
According to Dircks, Brent’s assistance wasn’t conditional on knowing the woman’s personal details or circumstances. His motivation came from a simpler place of recognizing someone who needed help in that moment.
Values learned from home
For Brent, this wasn’t a calculated move for attention. This grocery position marks his first employment since arriving in the United States, and he brings with him values instilled by his upbringing in a household that emphasized service to others.
“I just did it because it was the right thing to do,” he explained.
The elderly woman may not have even realized that it was Brent specifically who resolved her payment issue. His intention was simply to help and then return to his regular duties.
Community response
Deeply moved by what she witnessed, Dani Dircks took action of her own. She established a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of helping Brent purchase a vehicle and pursue his educational aspirations in nursing school. After completing his current studies, Brent hopes to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, drawn to the profession by his passion for assisting others.
While most customers rush through their shopping trips focused on their own lengthy to-do lists, rarely making eye contact with checkout staff, Brent approaches his work differently. His position gives him a unique vantage point to observe the challenges people face—exhausted parents, customers carefully managing limited budgets, and individuals navigating difficult days.
