Japan’s First Female Prime Minister Secures Historic Victory in Snap Elections

In a landmark achievement, Sanae Takaichi has become Japan’s first female Prime Minister, leading the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to its largest electoral triumph since its inception. The victory has set the stage for Takaichi to advance her ambitious political agenda, which she acknowledges may “split public opinion.”

Despite the challenges posed by the shortest campaign period in post-war history and severe snowstorms across Japan, the LDP managed to secure a two-thirds majority in the lower house. This decisive win provides the party with the power to override opposition vetoes and initiate amendments to Japan’s pacifist constitution, a long-standing goal since 1955. Takaichi has expressed her intention to pave the way for a referendum on this issue.

The LDP’s sweeping victory marks the most significant majority any single party has achieved in the lower house during the post-war era. An impressive 90% of the candidates fielded by the LDP emerged victorious.

Historically, the LDP has bounced back under charismatic leaders, including Takaichi’s mentor, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. According to Jeffrey Hornung, a Japan expert at RAND Corporation, Japan’s political landscape is “very personalistic,” with a strong focus on leadership rather than the party itself.

Following the election results, Japan’s Nikkei stock index soared to historic highs, with bond yields rising and the Yen depreciating. These market reactions mirror expectations of Takaichi’s economic policies, which include stimulus spending and tax cuts. However, questions linger regarding the funding of these initiatives, given Japan’s government debt exceeding 200% of GDP.

Takaichi’s mandate appears to have empowered her to tackle opposition head-on. She stated at the LDP headquarters, “We have advocated policies facing significant opposition,” referencing her plans for shifts in economic and fiscal policies, bolstering security, and enhancing intelligence capabilities.

Takaichi’s victory aligns with a broader shift to the political right in Japan. After her election as LDP president, the centrist Komeito Party exited the coalition, leading the LDP to form a new alliance with the right-wing Japan Innovation Party. Meanwhile, Komeito’s new coalition, the Centrist Reform Alliance, suffered significant losses, prompting leadership resignations.

Further, Takaichi reiterated her commitment to revising Japan’s National Defense Strategy, hinting at possible changes to the country’s non-nuclear policies. She emphasized, “This year marks 10 years since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe advocated a free and open Indo-Pacific. I aim to deepen this vision.”

Maintaining the Japan-U.S. alliance as a cornerstone of foreign policy, Takaichi plans to meet with President Trump next month. As Trump prepares for a visit to China, Takaichi remains embroiled in a diplomatic standoff with Beijing over potential military responses to a Chinese blockade of Taiwan.

As the Trump administration urges allies to share defense burdens, Hornung notes that Takaichi’s strong mandate positions her well to enact significant policy changes. “She can’t say anymore, ‘well, I can’t do that because the opposition parties will turn it down.’ I mean, she has the numbers to pass policies and do things.”
