A Family’s Journey to Faith and Safety Amidst Persecution in Somalia

In a dramatic turn of events, a family in Somalia is grappling with the consequences of their newfound Christian faith, which has forced them to flee their home. The family’s conversion story begins with Fatuma Juma, a mother of three from Kismayo, who embraced Christianity in November 2024. In Somalia, where apostasy is punishable by death, Juma initially kept her conversion a secret.

Juma’s faith journey took a significant turn during an underground fellowship meeting on April 25, 2025. As she listened to an audio message, she was overcome with emotion and began to weep. Her daughters, aged 7 and 9, alarmed by her state, informed their father, Ibrahim Mohammed, who subsequently sent their 13-year-old son to bring her back.

Upon arriving, the son found Juma visibly upset and confused, as described in a Morning Star News interview. Mohammed, upon confronting his wife, was met with a prayerful declaration from Juma, who said, “Oh Lord Jesus, forgive my past sins. Since now I am born again, I will not disobey you from today.”

Initially shocked, Mohammed prohibited Juma from attending Christian gatherings, forcing her to practice her faith in secrecy. However, her desire to worship freely grew stronger, leading her to flee with her children to an undisclosed location on August 15. Mohammed, distressed by the separation, later asked to join them, promising to allow Juma to practice her faith.

Juma accepted her husband’s request, and on Christmas Day, Mohammed also embraced Christianity. This change, however, placed the entire family at risk, as returning to Kismayo could lead to violent repercussions. The couple is now seeking prayers and financial aid to support their children’s education and their livelihood while in hiding.

“Please pray for us,” Juma appealed. “We only want to live in peace and worship God freely.”

Somalia ranks second on Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List of countries where being a Christian is most perilous. The country’s constitution endorses Islam as the state religion and prohibits the spread of other faiths. Moreover, Islamic law, which includes the death penalty for apostasy, is strictly enforced, with extremist groups like al Shabaab upholding these principles.
