A Bold Proposal to Strengthen Families: Marriage Bootcamps and Wedding Bonuses

In a novel approach to tackling declining marriage rates and promoting family stability, a recent report suggests that churches could host government-backed marriage bootcamps for cohabiting parents. The incentive? A potential “wedding bonus” of up to $5,000 to encourage couples to tie the knot.

Published by the Heritage Foundation, the report, “Saving America by Saving the Family: A Foundation for the Next 250 Years,” outlines strategies to bolster family structures at a time when the U.S. fertility rate has plummeted to 1.6 births per woman as of 2024.

Among the report’s strategies is the establishment of marriage bootcamps specifically for cohabiting couples with children. These bootcamps, which could be managed by local churches and nonprofits, aim to provide relationship education and support to encourage stable family life.

The idea of marriage bootcamps is not completely new. The report references past government initiatives like the Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood grants, which have aimed to improve communication and conflict management skills among couples.

A proposal within the report suggests that these bootcamps could be promoted through local nonprofits, as well as media advertisements, to reach a wider audience. It draws parallels with prior efforts such as the Helping Every Area of Relationships Thrive initiative.

Data from grantees like Community-Based Connections, Inc., indicate that over 95% of participating families experienced improved family dynamics, showcasing the potential success of such programs.

A unique element of the proposal is the “wedding bonus.” Couples who complete the bootcamp could receive this bonus, funded by private donors rather than the government, as an incentive to marry. The report emphasizes that this approach complements existing family policies and includes safeguards against fraud.

Local churches running these programs would address critical topics like communication, financial management, and conflict resolution. Couples would also be paired with mentor couples for additional support as they navigate the early stages of marriage.

The report suggests that these measures could provide a structure encouraging marriage and stable family environments, thereby addressing broader societal challenges.
