“Now that we’re here, that’s the bullseye,” said U.S. coach John Wroblewski, acknowledging the team’s long-standing ambition to clinch Olympic gold. Entering the 2026 Olympic Games as strong contenders, Team USA has lived up to expectations, overpowering their rivals, including defending champions Canada.

The U.S. team’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable, as they have scored 31 goals while conceding just one across six matches. Five of these matches were shutouts, setting an Olympic record. Their undefeated streak includes a notable 5-0 triumph over Canada, who might be their opponents again in the final, depending on the outcome of Canada’s semifinal against Switzerland.

“Our play is only going to go up from here, honestly. I don’t even think we’re at the peak,” said Hayley Scamurra, highlighting the team’s confidence. Scamurra contributed to the scoreline with a goal in the second period, bringing the U.S. team’s total to five.

During their semifinal match with Sweden, Team USA’s offensive prowess was evident in a rapid sequence towards the end of the second period. Abbey Murphy’s precise wrist shot was followed by a powerful blue-line strike from Laila Edwards, which was deflected by Kendall Coyne Schofield’s stick, doubling the score to 4-0. Even a change in Sweden’s goaltending strategy couldn’t halt the Americans, as Britta Curl-Salemme set up Scamurra for the final goal.

Swedish coach Ulf Lundberg remarked, “Maybe today we needed a plexiglass in front of our net to stay in the game,” underscoring the U.S. team’s relentless attack.

The confidence in Team USA is bolstered not only by their offensive capabilities but also by their exceptional goaltending duo, Aerin Frankel and Gwyneth Phillips. “We can tell when we’re on a roll. We can tell when we’re buzzing,” said defenseman Cayla Barnes.

With two previous Olympic golds in 1998 and 2018, Team USA aims to add another to their collection. A win would be especially significant for team captain Hilary Knight, participating in her fifth Olympics at 36. It also presents an opportunity for the younger talents, like 22-year-old Laila Edwards and 23-year-olds Abbey Murphy and Caroline Harvey, to achieve their first Olympic gold.

“It’s so important that they’ve gotten that time and we’ve given them those opportunities because they’re so confident when they get out there,” said Taylor Heise, 25. “I learn so much from them, and they keep me young at heart as well.”
