Pressure Mounts on Rep. Tony Gonzales Amid Allegations and Calls for Resignation
In a rapidly unfolding political saga, Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales finds himself under intense scrutiny as fellow party members urge him to step down following revelations of an alleged affair with a staffer who later died by suicide.
At least four of his Republican colleagues have openly called for Gonzales to resign or abandon his reelection campaign. This comes after explicit text messages between Gonzales and Regina Santos-Aviles came to light. Santos-Aviles tragically died by suicide after setting herself on fire.
On social media, Texas Rep. Brandon Gill declared, “America deserves better. Tony should drop out of the race.” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna from Florida echoed this sentiment, urging Gonzales to withdraw.
Additional pressure comes from GOP Reps. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Nancy Mace of South Carolina, who have also demanded Gonzales’ resignation.
While Gonzales’ office has not issued a response, the congressman has previously denied the allegations. Meanwhile, NPR has not independently verified the content of the text messages.
The controversy unfolds as House Speaker Mike Johnson navigates a slim Republican majority in the House. With only a four-seat lead, there is concern that potential retirements could further narrow the margin ahead of the midterm elections.
An investigation by the Office of Congressional Conduct is already underway regarding the alleged affair. Findings from this probe are anticipated to be submitted to the House Ethics Committee soon, according to an anonymous source.
Speaker Johnson, when asked about Gonzales’ future, labeled the allegations as “very serious” but emphasized the importance of letting investigations run their course. “As in every case like this, you have to allow the investigations to play out and all the facts to come out,” he stated.
Representing Texas’ 23rd congressional district, Gonzales is in his third term and faces a challenging primary on March 3. He may encounter a repeat of the 2024 Republican runoff where he narrowly defeated conservative YouTuber Brandon Herrera by approximately 350 votes.
Herrera, known as “the AK guy,” has robust support from Republicans, including those in the House Freedom Caucus. In the midst of the controversy, the political wing of the Freedom Caucus has endorsed Herrera, praising his defense of Second Amendment rights without addressing the allegations against Gonzales.
