When flames consumed a wooden house on Chief Creek Road in Lawrence County, Tennessee, in the early morning hours, a 12-year-old girl made a split-second decision that would save a life. Rather than waiting for emergency responders, she rushed into the inferno to rescue a 72-year-old woman who couldn’t escape on her own.
The emergency call came in just before 4:30 a.m., reporting a structure fire that had already fully engulfed the home. By the time Lawrence County Fire and Rescue crews arrived at the scene, the young girl had already accomplished what trained firefighters would consider an extraordinarily dangerous task—she had pulled the elderly resident to safety.
Critical moments before help arrived
While the 12-year-old entered the burning structure, one of her siblings contacted 911 to report the emergency. The dispatcher received crucial information about the victim’s condition: “She has severe burns on her neck. She’s 72 and she’s crippled.”
The elderly woman’s limited mobility meant she had virtually no chance of escaping the flames without assistance. The fire had spread quickly through the wooden structure, and a mobile home located less than 20 feet away was also at risk.
Fire officials commend extraordinary bravery
Tyler McDow, director of Lawrence County Fire and Rescue, expressed his admiration for the child’s heroic actions. “That child made a decision to help somebody out of the house that some adults would have trouble overcoming the fear,” McDow said.
He explained the severe dangers the girl faced during the rescue attempt. Without any protective gear, she was exposed to superheated toxic gases that can be lethal within seconds. The burns she sustained during the rescue demonstrate just how perilous the conditions were inside the home.
Medical response and current condition
Both the young rescuer and the elderly woman received initial treatment at the scene from emergency medical personnel. Lawrence County EMS then transported them to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for further care.
The 72-year-old woman suffered significant burn injuries but has since been stabilized. The 12-year-old girl sustained minor burns to her extremities and is expected to recover.
Fire investigation reveals cause
After extinguishing the blaze, fire officials conducted an investigation to determine what sparked the deadly fire. They concluded that a faulty pipe connected to a wood stove used for heating the home was the likely cause.
Investigators also discovered that the residence lacked working smoke detectors, which could have provided earlier warning and potentially prevented the fire from reaching such devastating proportions before anyone noticed.
