In a tragic event that has drawn international attention, the murder of a Christian family in India has sparked significant concern over the motivations behind the attack. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has highlighted the potential religious motivations, which seem to have been overlooked by local authorities.
The victims, Jitendra Soren, his wife Malati, and their 15-year-old daughter, were killed on January 25. The alleged perpetrators are members of their extended family, who reportedly opposed the Sorens’ conversion to Christianity. The family had embraced the Christian faith roughly a year before the incident and had faced threats related to their church attendance.
Residing in Nialijharan, Odisha, the Soren family had been enduring threats from relatives accusing them of practicing black magic, an allegation tied to their newfound faith. On the day of the murders, these relatives visited the Soren home, reiterating the accusations. They also claimed that health issues within the family were linked to the Sorens’ religious activities.
During the confrontation, Jitendra Soren was assaulted, and when his daughter attempted to intervene, she was fatally struck with an axe. Malati Soren was also killed while trying to protect her daughter, and Jitendra Soren was murdered while attempting to flee.
A younger daughter managed to escape the horrific scene, while the Sorens’ older daughter and son were not present. The surviving family members are now in hiding, seeking safety with a family friend.
Despite these circumstances, the police have categorized the incident as a land dispute in their First Information Report, rather than acknowledging the potential religious motivation behind the attack.
Mervyn Thomas, founder and president of CSW, criticized the authorities’ stance, stating, “The brutal murder of Jitendra Soren, his wife Malati, and their young daughter is a chilling reminder of the extreme vulnerability faced by religious minorities in Odisha and across India.
“To dismiss this horrific act as a mere land dispute is not only a distortion of the facts but a profound injustice to the survivors who witnessed their family being targeted for their faith.”
Thomas further urged the government to ensure the investigation reflects the anti-Christian sentiments and false accusations of black magic that may have motivated the attack. He emphasized the need for immediate action to protect the surviving children and address the growing intolerance impacting tribal communities.
He warned, “India cannot allow a culture of impunity to take root where changing one’s faith becomes a death sentence.”
