When Logan Vangemert watched an instructional video about CPR, he had no idea that within 24 hours, he would be using those exact techniques to save someone’s life. The fourth-grader from Michigan became a hero at his church when he performed chest compressions on a supervisor who had collapsed in cardiac arrest.
The incident unfolded in early February at a church in Richland, where 9-year-old Logan witnessed his supervisor Tom suddenly collapse. Without hesitation, the young boy sprang into action, rolling Tom over and administering CPR until help arrived. Tom survived the medical emergency, thanks in large part to Logan’s quick response.
Divine timing and preparation
What makes Logan’s lifesaving actions particularly remarkable is that he had only learned the CPR technique just one day before the incident. The video he watched provided him with enough knowledge to take action when seconds mattered most.
Logan attributes his ability to act in that critical moment to a higher power. “Whenever I helped him is when the Holy Spirit talked to me,” he explained.
His mother, Jessica, expressed her pride in her son’s courage under pressure. “I am beyond proud of him for taking the step up and stepping out and doing something extremely difficult, even for adults,” she said.
Recognition and future aspirations
The young hero received recognition for his actions from multiple organizations. Brandon Elementary honored Logan at a school assembly where his classmates and teachers celebrated his bravery. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office also acknowledged his heroic efforts.
According to the American Heart Association, children as young as 9 years old possess the physical capability to perform effective CPR. Logan’s successful intervention demonstrates this capability in real-world circumstances.
The experience has influenced Logan’s career aspirations, as he now wants to pursue a path in medicine. His willingness to act despite having minimal training serves as a powerful reminder that preparation combined with courage can make the difference between life and death.
