A severe health crisis became the catalyst for a dramatic spiritual transformation in the life of well-known celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton, who recently opened up about experiencing what he describes as a direct encounter with God during a three-week hospital stay. The media personality documented his journey in a deeply personal video message shared with his followers.
What began as a seemingly routine case of influenza quickly escalated into a life-threatening medical emergency for Hilton. The situation deteriorated after he made the critical error of taking his flu medication without eating first, despite instructions to take it with food.
From flu to critical condition
The improper medication use triggered a cascade of serious complications. An ulcer formed, which then perforated, ultimately leading to sepsis—a potentially fatal condition where the body’s response to infection causes widespread inflammation. Within 24 hours, Hilton’s condition had declined so dramatically that he lost the ability to walk and required emergency medical transport.
Medical staff conducted extensive diagnostic testing including X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds in an effort to locate the perforation. The search took five days before surgeons could finally perform laparoscopic surgery to address the issue.

“One of the most special things about this experience is that God presented Himself to me,” he said, visibly emotional, crying through his words.
“It was not a feeling. God presented himself to me and then did something that I could only call miraculous. And I was very lucid. It was real and this has been life-changing.”
This marks a significant shift for someone raised in Catholic tradition but who never embraced the faith personally. Hilton received baptism, first communion, and confirmation, and spent seven years at a Jesuit educational institution. Despite this extensive religious background, belief had always eluded him.
“I was never a believer until now,” he said plainly.
