When two young boys in Akron, Ohio, encountered something that frightened them deeply in their neighborhood, they didn’t call their parents or run home. Instead, they made their way directly to a local church, demonstrating a profound understanding of where to turn in moments of spiritual distress. Their instinctive response to fear has captured the attention of millions online and sparked conversations about the role of prayer in modern life.

Kayden Moreland and Dayvionte Salaam were exploring their Akron neighborhood when they discovered a pentagram along with a suspicious figure in the area. The encounter left Salaam feeling as though something had attached itself to him—describing the sensation as being cursed. Rather than dismissing their concerns or attempting to handle the situation themselves, the boys immediately headed to Equip Church located on 825 E. Buchtel Avenue.

Seeking refuge at the church

The boys rang the doorbell of Pastor Crystal Varner, seeking urgent prayer and spiritual protection. Moreland explained their reasoning simply: “It felt like the safest place to ask for God.”

Pastor Varner was taken aback by the boys’ visit, noting its unusual nature. “I haven’t seen a child or children, a group of young men, run into a church at all, let alone asking for prayer in a sense of urgency,” she said.

The pastor immediately prayed over both boys at the doorway, offering coverage “from head to foot in Jesus’ name.” As the boys departed on their bicycles following the prayer, one of them called back, “That’s why I love pastor.” Before they left, Varner invited them to return the following day, and they honored that request.

Viral response to spiritual maturity

Evangelist Ciera Walker shared Ring camera footage of the boys’ visit to the church on social media platforms. The video resonated deeply with viewers, accumulating more than 16 million views. Walker reflected on the significance of the moment: “It just shows you how vital prayer is and how much it’s missing in this world.”

The incident has raised important questions about how people—regardless of age—respond to fear and uncertainty. While many adults exhaust all available options before turning to prayer, these young boys demonstrated that prayer doesn’t need to be a last resort. Their immediate decision to seek spiritual intervention rather than rely solely on their own understanding challenges common assumptions about faith maturity being tied to age or years of religious practice.

The boys’ actions serve as a reminder that spiritual strength develops through deliberate choices rather than simply through the passage of time. Their instinct to run toward prayer rather than away from their fear illustrates a level of spiritual awareness that transcends their young age.
