Former Pastor Steven Lawson Seeks Solitude Following Confession
Steven Lawson, once a prominent pastor at Trinity Bible Church in Dallas, has left the state after a scandal involving an adulterous relationship. The former pastor, who admitted to the inappropriate relationship last year, is now residing away from his family in hopes of giving them the necessary space to heal, as shared by a close friend.

In a recent blog update, Pastor Clint Archer of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, shared insights into Lawson’s current situation. Archer, who has maintained a friendship with Lawson, recounted a conversation where Lawson likened his troubles to a “shipwreck.” The discussion arose after a sermon by Archer on 1 Timothy 1:19, which talks about maintaining faith and conscience.
Expressing profound regret, Lawson reportedly “poured out his heart” during a phone call with Archer, illustrating the deep remorse he feels. Despite his desire to make a public statement, Lawson has refrained from doing so to prevent further harm to those affected by his actions, as advised by his counselors.
Archer provided further details about the relationship, mentioning that it began as an acquaintance and friendship over five years and only turned sexual shortly before it was discovered. After confessing to the church elders and his family, Lawson moved to Nashville to stay temporarily with his brother, a decision made collectively for the benefit of all involved.
While in Nashville, Lawson continues to seek spiritual guidance and counseling. He remains in contact with his wife and periodically visits Dallas. Archer emphasized that Lawson understands his permanent disqualification from ministry roles and is exploring secular employment options.
The possibility of a video interview with Lawson has been discussed, where he would openly address his actions, contingent upon approval from his family and church elders. Archer plans to share any such communication through the Cage Free Theology podcast and YouTube channel if realized.
Lawson’s past affiliations include serving as a dean at The Master’s University and Seminary in California. According to Phil Johnson, executive director at Grace to You, the woman involved in the affair was an adult in her mid-twenties and previously a student at The Master’s College. Johnson clarified that despite the relationship’s romantic nature, “no literal fornication was involved” and it did not constitute pastoral abuse.
