When Chelsea Haley walked into her fourth-grade classroom as a 24-year-old novice teacher, she never imagined she would soon become a mother to two boys—one of them sitting right there in her class. Her extraordinary journey from overwhelmed educator to devoted adoptive parent demonstrates how faith can lead people down unexpected paths that forever change lives.

Haley’s story began when she joined Teach For America, responding to what she felt was divine guidance to serve in underprivileged schools. Among her students was Jerome Robinson, whose disruptive classroom behavior nearly drove the young teacher to abandon her career entirely. Rather than giving up, Haley discovered the root of Jerome’s struggles: a troubled family environment that also impacted his younger brother, Jace.

A divine calling leads to motherhood

As Haley grew to understand Jerome’s circumstances, she felt an increasing pull to help both him and his baby brother. She credits divine intervention, saying God appeared in her dreams with a message to adopt the siblings. “My faith played a huge role in this journey, and I truly felt God calling me to be their mother,” she says.

The financial sacrifice was substantial. Haley liquidated her entire life savings and withdrew funds from her 401k retirement account to cover the adoption costs. “I never thought I’d be a single mom at 24,” Chelsea shared. “Especially to two boys—one, my 12-year-old student, and the other, just a year-and-a-half old.”

Financial struggles and perseverance

The adoption drained Haley’s financial resources, forcing her to rely on credit cards for daily expenses while postponing her student loan payments. The debt accumulated quickly, but she remained steadfast in her commitment. “Being their mom is the greatest blessing of my life. Every morning, I get to love these two boys,” she says.

To support her new family, Haley worked multiple jobs, including tutoring and grocery delivery services. She and the boys moved in with her parents to reduce expenses. Her determination and hard work ultimately proved successful—Haley has now completely eliminated $48,683.41 in combined credit card and student loan debt.

“It doesn’t feel real yet,” Chelsea said. “It’s so amazing. I even logged into my student loans and it said, ‘Cleared. Zero balance.'”

Today, Haley continues building a secure future for her sons. Her decision to follow what she believed was divine guidance has transformed three lives, giving Jerome and Jace a stable, loving home while fulfilling her own purpose as a mother.
