When Jaydon Cintron discovered two bank envelopes containing nearly $10,000 in cash on the floor of a Chick-fil-A restroom during his break on Good Friday, the 18-year-old employee faced a choice that would reveal the depth of his character. His decision to return every penny, rooted in his Christian faith, has sparked conversations about integrity and moral courage in everyday situations.

The teen was on his routine break at the Kinston, North Carolina location when he made the surprising discovery next to a toilet in the men’s restroom. The two white envelopes, one from First Citizens Bank and another from Truist Bank, contained a total of $9,833 in cash.

“They were on the floor next to the toilet. My first thought was just like … okay, no, this isn’t happening,” Cintron told WITN. “Something is wrong.”

Immediate action and eventual reunion

Rather than pocket the substantial sum, Cintron immediately turned the envelopes over to restaurant staff. The team reviewed security camera footage attempting to identify the rightful owner, though their initial search proved unsuccessful. The owner eventually returned to the restaurant looking for the missing money and was reunited with his cash.

When questioned about why he didn’t keep the money for himself, Cintron’s response was straightforward and faith-based. “That’s not what Jesus would’ve done. That’s not what God would’ve wanted,” Cintron said.

Refusing recognition for doing right

The grateful owner attempted to reward Cintron with $500 for his honesty. The teenager initially declined the offer multiple times, explaining that he didn’t expect compensation for simply acting according to his beliefs. Only after persistent encouragement did he finally accept the reward.

Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette praised the young man’s actions. “A lot of people will … unfortunately, take that money and run with it,” he said. “Kudos to that employee at Chick-fil-A. He definitely deserves a reward.”

Restaurant owner John McPhaul also commended Cintron’s integrity. “True leadership, you know, true integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching,” McPhaul said. “Jaydon did that in this case, and he should be commended for it.”

The incident, which occurred just days before Easter, highlights how personal faith can guide moral decision-making even in circumstances where no one would have discovered any wrongdoing. Cintron’s choice demonstrates that character is ultimately defined by actions taken when accountability is absent.
