When medical imaging revealed a concerning mass on her pancreas, Jenny Tolman faced every parent’s worst nightmare. But in a hospital parking lot, singing a worship song while waiting for a CT scan, she says she experienced something extraordinary—a physical sensation she believes was God’s healing touch.
The unexpected medical crisis began during an ice storm when Tolman suffered a gallbladder attack. After seeking medical attention and undergoing blood work, her doctor ordered an ultrasound to investigate further.
During the ultrasound examination, Tolman experienced pain when the technician pressed below her left rib cage. “Oh, that hurt,” she recalled saying. The technician responded with a quiet “Hm” but couldn’t provide additional information due to professional restrictions.
The alarming phone call
Several days later, Tolman’s physician contacted her with troubling news. “Jenny, I’m so sorry that it’s taken me a few days to get back to you. I wanted to talk to the radiologist before I called you because your ultrasound results are very alarming,” her doctor explained. The radiologist had identified a mass on her pancreas, necessitating a CT scan for further evaluation.
The diagnosis sent Tolman into a state of panic, particularly because she has a three-year-old son named Bear. “I can’t… like nothing can happen to me. I have plans. I have other plans that does not involve something like this,” she said, expressing the fear any parent would feel in such circumstances.
Preparing through prayer
Before her scheduled CT scan, Tolman’s babysitter anointed the affected area with oil and prayed over her. During the drive to the medical facility, a friend also prayed with her via phone.
Arriving approximately 15 minutes before her appointment, Tolman remained in her vehicle and began singing ‘Open the Eyes of My Heart.’ It was during this moment of worship that she experienced something she describes as difficult to articulate.
“I literally feel a shift happen like in this area where your pancreas is,” she explained. She even laughed to herself, wondering if God had actually removed the mass.
Following this physical sensation, Tolman heard what she describes as a quiet, steady internal message: “Keep your eyes on me.”
Resisting fear with faith
Heeding this guidance, Tolman entered the hospital and actively resisted the temptation to search for frightening information on her phone, choosing prayer instead.
When called for her scan, anxiety returned. She asked a nurse to hold her hand briefly for comfort. As she entered the CT machine, she whispered, “Jesus, you are my peace.”
The nursing staff informed her that results typically take approximately 48 hours to process. However, just three hours later, her phone rang with unexpected news. “Jenny, I wanted to call you as soon as I could. Amazing news. You are absolutely perfect. Nothing showed up on the CT scan,” her doctor reported.
The mass had completely disappeared. The CT scan showed no abnormalities whatsoever.
“Did I feel the hand of God take that out of my body?” Tolman reflected. “Through the good and the bad. Praise him and he is there. Call on him and he will come. He loves you. Just talk to him. It’s really that simple. Took me a long time to figure that out and I’m still figuring it out.”
Tolman’s experience serves as an encouragement to others facing difficult diagnoses or frightening medical news, demonstrating her belief in the power of faith and worship during moments of crisis.
