London College of Bishops denounces antisemitic incidents

In a significant rebuke to rising antisemitic incidents, the London College of Bishops has issued a strong condemnation of recent attacks on Jewish synagogues, charities, and businesses. The troubling surge in these hostilities has alarmed communities and prompted urgent calls for action.

Counter-terrorism officials are currently investigating a spate of incidents, including an arson attack on a synagogue located in Finchley, along with similar suspected attacks on a Jewish charity-linked building and another synagogue in Harrow.

The escalation in violence appears to be linked to widespread discontent over Israel’s military activities in the Middle East.

In a public statement, the bishops described the antisemitic acts as “abhorrent,” emphasizing their intention to instill fear among Londoners, particularly targeting Jewish communities.

“When any religious or faith community is targeted, it damages the life of our city as a whole,” said the bishops.

“In speaking out, we do so as bishops and as leaders with responsibility for communities across London. Violence, hatred and intimidation directed at people of any faith undermine trust, fracture relationships, and corrode the foundations of a diverse and peaceful society.”

The statement further asserted solidarity with the Jewish community, acknowledging the broader pattern of religious hatred and racism.

“Antisemitism does not exist in isolation. It sits within a wider pattern of religious hate and racism,” they remarked.

“No form of prejudice should be normalised, excused or left unchallenged. We call on those with responsibility in public life to act decisively to protect all places of worship, to challenge hatred wherever it appears, and to give clear reassurance to communities who feel increasingly vulnerable.”

The bishops underscored their commitment to inclusivity, citing Christian teachings that affirm the inherent dignity of every individual, urging Londoners to reject fear and hatred.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis also weighed in, promising a robust governmental response. “We will work relentlessly to ensure antisemites and those who threaten the Jewish community here have nowhere to hide. And to show British Jews that we stand with them, and will do everything in our power to keep them safe,” he stated.
