White House Correspondents Dinner Shooting Suspect Described as “Very Smart” by Former Students
A shocking incident at the White House Correspondents Dinner has brought attention to Cole Allen, the suspect in the shooting. Described as “very smart” by students he tutored, Allen’s background has become the focus of intense scrutiny as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
According to NPR’s Rob Schmitz, Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, is a 31-year-old with impressive academic credentials. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Caltech and a master’s degree in computer science from a state university. Recently, he was employed by a company that tutors students for college entry exams, helping a 17-year-old student named Jason with his physics courses. “We would stay on topic the whole time,” Jason mentioned, noting that Allen never discussed his political views during their sessions.
NPR’s Steve Futterman reports that Allen was known for his intelligence and quirky personality. “You just know how some people, you know, if they’re really smart – kind of like that,” Jason commented. Despite the recent events, Jason was taken aback by the news involving his former tutor.
Futterman also uncovered that Allen had visited gun ranges in Southern California and had attended at least one No King’s march. His LinkedIn profile describes him as a mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, an independent game developer by experience, and a teacher by birth. Notably, he was named “teacher of the month” in 2024 by his employer.
The investigation has revealed that Allen was involved in the Christian Fellowship program at Caltech. However, a background check conducted by NPR showed no criminal records.
Authorities have been actively investigating Allen’s residence since the incident. FBI agents arrived at his home, which he shares with his parents, shortly after the shooting. They have been searching for digital devices and other evidence.
Further details emerged from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who explained that Allen traveled to Washington, D.C., by train, staying at the Washington Hilton Hotel where the incident occurred. The firearms recovered, a shotgun and handgun, were likely purchased within the last two years.
On Fox News, President Trump addressed the incident, referring to a manifesto Allen allegedly sent to his family before the attack. The document, containing anti-Trump references, indicated a plan to target administration officials. “And the guy is a sick guy when you read his manifesto,” Trump stated.
As the investigation continues, more information is expected to come to light about the motivations behind this alarming incident.
