Rahim Al-Hussaini Becomes New Aga Khan, Leading Ismaili Muslims Forward

In a historic transition of leadership for millions of Ismaili Muslims worldwide, Rahim Al-Hussaini has been designated as the new Aga Khan, marking the continuation of a 1,300-year dynasty. This significant appointment comes following the passing of his father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, who led the community for over six decades.

New spiritual leader takes helm of global Ismaili community

Rahim Al-Hussaini was officially named as Aga Khan V on Wednesday, becoming the 50th hereditary imam of the Shiite Ismaili Muslims. The appointment was revealed through his father’s will, following the passing of Aga Khan IV in Portugal on Tuesday.

For Ismaili Muslims, the position of Aga Khan carries profound significance, as the leader is recognized as a direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad. The role commands such respect that its holder is accorded treatment equivalent to a head of state.

Legacy of philanthropy and development

The Aga Khan Development Network, established under the previous leadership, maintains an extensive presence across more than 30 countries, managing an annual nonprofit development budget of approximately $1 billion. The organization focuses on critical areas including healthcare, housing, education, and rural economic development initiatives.

The late Aga Khan IV, who received the title “His Highness” from Queen Elizabeth in July 1957, was known for his role in fostering understanding between Islamic and Western societies. While maintaining distance from political matters, he dedicated his leadership to preserving Islamic culture and values while building bridges with other communities.

Global Ismaili community

The Ismaili community has deep historical roots across multiple regions, including Iran, Syria, and South Asia. Over generations, the community has expanded its presence to east Africa, Central Asia, the Middle East, and more recently to Europe, North America, and Australia. As part of their religious practice, Ismaili Muslims contribute up to 12.5% of their income to the Aga Khan’s stewardship.

The succession process will continue with the burial and will-reading ceremonies in the coming days, followed by an homage ceremony to mark this significant transition in leadership.
