As the Welsh Parliament elections approach, a significant campaign is gaining momentum, aiming to bring attention to key issues such as abortion and assisted suicide. Right To Life UK is at the forefront, mobilizing supporters to urge politicians in Wales to commit to critical pledges that address these matters.
Voters in Wales are set to cast their ballots next week for members of the Welsh Parliament. Right To Life UK believes their campaign will both illustrate voter sentiment on these sensitive topics and inform the public about where candidates stand.
The “Both Lives Pledge”
The first pledge, known as the “both lives pledge,” asks candidates to work towards reversing a recent amendment that effectively legalizes abortion up to birth. This pledge also seeks to end sex-selective abortions, lower the legal time frame for abortion, and combat “pregnancy discrimination” and unsafe home abortions.
Although the 24-week abortion limit remains, the amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill means that while medical professionals could face legal repercussions for performing late-term abortions, women who self-terminate after this period will not face punishment.
The “End-of-Life Protection Pledge”
Another key aspect of the campaign is the “end-of-life protection pledge” which advocates for more funding for palliative care and opposes any further legislative efforts to allow medically assisted suicide.
Efforts to legalize medically assisted suicide in the UK have been ongoing, with about 10 attempts since 2000, all of which have failed. The latest attempt by Labour’s Kim Leadbeater was a private member’s bill that did not progress due to time constraints and concerns over limited safeguards.
Catherine Robinson, a spokesperson for Right To Life UK, emphasized the importance of these pledges, stating, “When candidates are asked to sign these pledges, it helps show future MSs [Members of the Welsh Parliament] that many local people care deeply about protecting vulnerable lives. It also helps make clear where candidates stand on abortion and assisted suicide, so voters have this vital information before polling day.”
