A remarkable spiritual event unfolded at a Jacksonville beach last weekend when more than 2,500 individuals publicly declared their faith through baptism in the Atlantic Ocean. The massive gathering at Hanna Park represents an unprecedented milestone for Church of Eleven22, marking the largest single-day baptism in the congregation’s history.

The event drew over 14,000 attendees to the shoreline, where they gathered to witness, worship, and support those choosing to be baptized. This year’s number of 2,552 baptisms continues a dramatic upward trajectory that has characterized the church’s annual beach baptism tradition.

Exponential growth year after year

Since Pastor Joby Martin founded Church of Eleven22 in 2012, the annual beach baptism has experienced consistent expansion. The numbers tell a compelling story: 1,126 baptisms in 2023, followed by 1,614 in 2024, then 1,958 in 2025, culminating in this year’s record-breaking attendance.

The church shared on social media: “One by one, people walked into the water declaring that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior. The old is gone and new life has come! Because baptism isn’t what saves us, it’s the outward sign of an inward spiritual reality.”

An unexpected final baptism

Perhaps the most striking moment of the day involved the final person baptized—one of the shuttle bus drivers hired to transport attendees to the beach. Coming to the event as paid staff rather than a participant, the driver’s decision to be baptized exemplifies the unexpected ways the event impacted attendees.

“Only God could write a story like that,” the church stated regarding this spontaneous conversion.

A shift in religious engagement

Pastor Joby Martin attributes the growing numbers to a fundamental change in how people approach their faith. “We’re standing on the shoulders of faithful men and women who have been praying for revival,” Martin explained. He noted that casual Christianity is fading, adding, “The people showing up are very serious about Jesus and very serious about just taking the next step of what He has called them to do.”

This phenomenon extends beyond Jacksonville. Similar movements have emerged across the nation, with beach baptisms occurring in California and revival gatherings spreading to college campuses. Martin observed, “The church is alive and well, the Spirit of God is on the move, and the gospel of Jesus Christ is still changing lives today.”

The biblical foundation of baptism

The church emphasized that baptism represents a personal commitment to Christ rather than membership in a particular congregation. The practice finds its roots in scripture, with Paul explaining: “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” — Romans 6:3-4 (NKJV).

Peter’s words on Pentecost further illuminate the practice: “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 2:38 (NKJV).

Jesus directly commanded His followers: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 28:19 (NKJV). He also declared: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” — Mark 16:16 (NKJV).

The transformation promised through baptism is captured in 2 Corinthians: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)
