In a significant development, the Catholic Church in England and Wales has voiced its support for an international statement condemning Israeli policies in the West Bank. The statement, endorsed by the UK and various global leaders, highlights growing concerns over the escalating situation in the region.

The joint declaration points to a notable decline in stability within the West Bank, attributing this to Israel’s increased territorial control efforts. It underscores that these actions are jeopardizing the feasibility of a two-state solution.

According to the statement, violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers has reached “unprecedented levels,” raising alarms among international observers.

Christian Palestinians have not been spared from this turmoil. The town of Taybeh, predominantly Christian, has experienced multiple attacks, severely impacting its residents’ livelihoods. Although Israeli authorities have condemned these violent acts, accountability remains elusive as no arrests have been made.

A particular point of contention is Israel’s proposed development of the “E1 area.” This strategic four-square-mile piece of land connects east Jerusalem with Ma’ale Adumim, an Israeli settlement. Critics argue that this development could effectively bisect the West Bank, representing “a serious breach of international law.”

The statement has garnered support from leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, and the EU.

Bishop Jim Curry, representing the Catholic Church in England and Wales, expressed his backing for the statement, sharing his own unsettling experiences with settlers during a visit to the West Bank.

“I add my voice to Church leaders and all who want the Government of Israel to end its expansion of settlements and for the government to prevent such expansion. The Israeli government also needs to ‘respect the Hashemite custodianship over Christian and Muslim Holy Sites, the historic status quo arrangements, and lift financial restrictions on the PA and the Palestinian economy,” he stated.

“As a Church leader I stand with those who continue to oppose further illegal annexation and the forcible displacement of Palestinians.”
