A young boy from Sierra Leone, Abubakarr, has found new freedom on the playground and football field, thanks to the intervention of Mercy Ships, a Christian health charity. Born with the condition polydactyly, Abubakarr had six toes on each foot, a condition typically correctable through surgery.

In Sierra Leone, access to such medical procedures is severely limited, with only two reconstructive plastic surgeons available nationwide. Compounding the issue, most of the population, 90 percent according to Mercy Ships, cannot afford surgery, leaving many children like Abubakarr unable to participate fully in everyday activities.

Abubakarr’s grandmother, Adama, shared the challenges he faced, saying, “When he tries to run, his feet knock against each other and he falls. Even during school sports, he would be eager to join – but the moment he starts running, he trips and falls.”

The turning point came when Abubakarr’s aunt learned about Mercy Ships from a neighbor. This neighbor, Binta, had firsthand experience with the charity, as her daughter had received orthopedic surgery from them. Mercy Ships operates hospital ships that travel globally, offering free medical services to those in need.

Abubakarr underwent a 90-minute surgery, followed by two weeks of rehabilitation. His recovery was closely supported by volunteer Louise Matthews, a physical therapist from South Africa, who remarked, “Abubakarr did really well after surgery. We got to watch him take his first steps in what we call ‘Darko shoes’ – special boots we use for kids recovering from polydactyly surgeries. His recovery just kept getting better.”

As a joyful conclusion to his journey, Abubakarr was gifted his first pair of shoes, marking a new chapter in his ability to engage with his peers and enjoy the simple joys of childhood.
