When a group of teenagers spotted a distressed dog near the water in Newport Beach, California, one 15-year-old didn’t hesitate to act. What started as a regular afternoon with friends turned into a life-saving rescue that reunited a beloved pet with its family.

Mateo Akerman and his friends were spending time near Park and Jade Avenues on Balboa Island on June 18 when they first noticed George, a dog wandering dangerously close to traffic. The situation quickly escalated when the animal entered the harbor waters and began struggling to stay afloat.

Quick thinking and decisive action

Without pausing to deliberate, Mateo dove into the water and swam toward the struggling animal. His initial plan was to guide George back to safety, but it soon became apparent the exhausted dog lacked the strength to make it on his own. Mateo adapted quickly, taking George into his arms and swimming back with him.

“I carried him back to shore,” Mateo told KTLA. Video footage of the rescue captures the dramatic moment when Mateo reached the struggling dog in the water and brought him safely to land.

Ensuring a safe reunion

The rescue didn’t end once they reached dry ground. Mateo and his friends wrapped the wet, tired dog in a towel to help him warm up. They discovered a phone number on George’s collar and immediately contacted his owner. Rather than leaving once the call was made, the teenagers remained with George, keeping him comfortable and secure until his family arrived to collect him.

For dog owners, pets aren’t just animals—they’re cherished family members. The Akerman rescue exemplifies the compassion and quick action that can make all the difference when a beloved companion is in danger. Thanks to one teenager’s willingness to jump into action, George made it home safely to his relieved family.
