Controversy Arises Over National Guard Deployment in Washington, D.C.

Amidst ongoing national security debates, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has expressed strong objections to the use of her state’s National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., outside of the America 250 celebrations. In a letter to the head of Michigan’s National Guard, she emphasized that the troops should not be involved in President Trump’s joint task force aimed at crime reduction.

“Please take all necessary measures to ensure the Michigan National Guard is only supporting the narrow and limited America 250 Mission and is in no way supporting the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Mission,” Whitmer stated, referencing the federal task force’s official name.

In August 2025, President Trump deployed hundreds of troops to D.C. to address crime, despite a decrease in crime rates. The number of troops has since grown to over 4,800 from D.C. and nearly two dozen states, primarily those led by Republicans at first.

Michigan, with 161 troops in D.C., is among four Democratic-led states sending National Guard members for the America 250 events, alongside North Carolina, Kentucky, and Minnesota. North Carolina and Kentucky each dispatched one guard member, while Minnesota sent over a hundred recently.

Kentucky’s solitary guard member was recalled after being “diverted to the task force by the federal government without the knowledge or consent of Gov. Beshear of the Kentucky Guard,” according to Scottie Ellis, spokesperson for Gov. Beshear.

All four Democratic states clarified their troops’ involvement in America 250 only, not for law enforcement. They also supported litigation challenging the federal deployment, recently filing an amicus brief.

Recently, a video surfaced showing troops, claiming to be Michigan National Guard, patrolling Georgetown, far from America 250 sites. NPR confirmed the video’s authenticity, but Whitmer’s office has yet to verify the troops’ identity.

Under Title 32 status, the federal government funds the deployment, while state governors retain command. However, former Guard officials note the operational complexity makes state oversight challenging.

Whitmer’s letter further warns that if the mission scope isn’t limited to America 250, Michigan will “end its support for the mission.” Legal experts worry about the difficulty in separating America 250 activities from the joint task force’s broader operations, which include patrols in residential and public areas.

Despite being listed in the federal joint task force numbers, Democratic states assert their troops should not be counted as part of the task force. The joint task force spokesman stated that while they oversee all guard members in D.C., the listing does not alter their specific missions. No immediate comment was provided regarding Michigan troops’ presence in Georgetown.
