A Shocking Turn in Maine’s Senate Race: Platner Suspends Campaign Amid Allegations
The political landscape in Maine has been rocked by the abrupt suspension of Graham Platner’s Senate campaign, following serious allegations that have led to a mass withdrawal of support from his Democratic allies.
On Wednesday, Platner announced via social media that his campaign operations were being halted. “We believe that for the movement to continue, it can’t be me. And for that reason, we are suspending campaign operations,” he stated. Platner emphasized that the decision was not an admission of guilt regarding the allegations, but rather a response to “the structures that are being taken away from us by those in power.”
Throughout numerous controversies, including accusations related to controversial tattoos, offensive online posts, and inappropriate messages, Platner had retained the backing of many Democrats. However, the tipping point came with a Politico report that brought to light allegations of sexual assault from Jenny Racicot, a former acquaintance. Platner has firmly denied these allegations, stating, “Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.”
Jenny Racicot’s claims of assault in 2021, published in the Politico article, prompted Platner to reconsider the future of his campaign. Previously, Racicot and other women had shared unsettling experiences with Platner in a New York Times feature, though the rape allegation was not disclosed at that time. Racicot later detailed the alleged incident to CNN.
The fallout was swift. Notable Democrats such as Rep. Ro Khanna, Sen. Ruben Gallego, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren rescinded their endorsements. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an early supporter, also withdrew his backing, and the Maine Democratic Party called for Platner to exit the race.
The decisive blow came from the Democratic Senate campaign committee, which declared it would not invest in the race if Platner remained. Faced with mounting pressure and a deadline of July 13 to withdraw for a new nominee to be named by July 27, Platner’s retreat seemed inevitable.
What Lies Ahead?
Platner was initially seen as a formidable challenger to incumbent GOP Sen. Susan Collins and a potential model for progressive campaigning. Now, the Democratic path to retaking the Senate majority, which hinges on flipping Maine, is in jeopardy.
Jessica Taylor from the Cook Political Report remarked, “It is virtually impossible to see a path for Senate Democrats back to the majority if they do not flip Maine.” The Maine Democratic Party has already begun preparations for a nominating convention to select a new contender, should a vacancy arise.
Potential candidates include Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, former Maine CDC head Nirav Shah, and former state Senate President Troy Jackson. Jackson, who recently filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, may face scrutiny due to his ties with Platner. Shah, while popular from his health director tenure, may encounter challenges due to recent voting activity in Georgia.
Bellows, who previously ran against Collins in 2014 but lost significantly, and Maine Beer Company owner Dan Kleban, who briefly pursued a Senate bid last year, are also being considered.
Jessica Taylor noted that any new Democratic candidate “would represent a much better chance against Susan Collins” and could shift the focus back to the incumbent senator, which is critical for the Democrats’ strategy.
