Mike Lindell’s Candidacy for Minnesota Governor Sparks Debate
In a move that has stirred political discussions across Minnesota, Mike Lindell, known for his company MyPillow, is leading the GOP primary race for governor with a campaign that heavily leans on former President Donald Trump’s support. While his strong alignment with Trump has bolstered his popularity among certain voters, it has raised concerns among other Republicans about his viability in the general election.
President Trump, despite not having won Minnesota in his presidential bids, has given Lindell a powerful endorsement. This development was highlighted by Dana Ferguson of Minnesota Public Radio News, who observed Lindell’s campaign efforts at the Farmfest trade show. Unlike other candidates who opted for casual attire, Lindell made a statement in a dark suit and red tie, emphasizing his connection to Trump.
MIKE LINDELL: “I have an advantage over everyone up here. I can call up and work with the president of the United States.”
Despite Trump’s endorsement, the state GOP had previously backed a different candidate at their May convention. Republican strategist Preya Samsundar expressed surprise at Trump’s endorsement of Lindell, who has been a controversial figure due to his involvement in denying the 2020 election results and facing legal challenges from voting machine companies.
PREYA SAMSUNDAR: “It’s really not shocking to see that he has bucked the party in their endorsement process by choosing someone that he’s got a close, personal relationship with.”
Lindell’s candidacy has also faced scrutiny regarding his residency and past personal allegations, which he denies. Lindell claims these issues are part of a coordinated attempt to undermine his campaign following Trump’s endorsement.
LINDELL: “It’s a coordinated attack. It started when I got the president’s endorsement.”
Supporters like Mary Jo Kukacka are drawn to Lindell not only for his Trump connection but for his perceived honesty and authenticity.
MARY JO KUKACKA: “He’s an honest individual, and he’s not your typical politician, promising you all kinds of stuff and not delivering. He’s not a polished spokesperson.”
Meanwhile, other candidates are positioning themselves as agents of change, such as Kendall Qualls, who secured the party convention’s endorsement, and Lisa Demuth, who highlights her bipartisan leadership experience.
KENDALL QUALLS: “When I was on active duty as an artillery officer, when the conventional forces couldn’t get it done, we brought in the special forces. We brought in something different. This is why we need different leadership in a state today.”
LISA DEMUTH: “Absolutely everything that we passed over the last two years had to be bipartisan. We have proven that we can do that here in Minnesota, and as your next governor, my proof is that I can lead this state.”
As the race progresses, the Republican candidates face potential Democratic challenger Senator Amy Klobuchar, who has criticized the GOP contenders for their alignment with Trump’s policies.
AMY KLOBUCHAR: “We do not need a governor who is a rubber stamp of Donald Trump. We need a governor who is going to put you first, who’s going to put Minnesota first.”
