During Seattle’s bustling Seafair weekend celebration, what began as a peaceful afternoon of reading by the water turned into a life-saving mission for one college athlete. Three young girls found themselves in grave danger in Lake Washington’s deep waters, and their rescue depended entirely on the quick thinking of a stranger nearby.
Lillie Vehling, a water polo player from UC Davis, was spending her time at Genesee Park with a book in hand, anticipating the U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show performance. Her attention shifted when she spotted trouble developing near the buoy lane.
A desperate situation unfolds
The scene that caught Vehling’s eye was alarming. Three girls were far from shore in dangerous conditions, and their struggle was intensifying by the second.
“There were three girls who were out pretty far by the buoy lane that they had set up, and they did not look very good,” Vehling said. “They were already bobbing up and down trying to get breaths, and one of the girls was actually drowning the others in order to breathe, and that’s when I knew I had to jump in.”
Training meets opportunity
Vehling’s background as a former lifeguard and swim instructor proved invaluable. She immediately entered the water and swam toward the struggling children, assessing the situation as she approached.
Her strategy was methodical and effective. “I first grabbed the girl that was drowning the other two to get her out of the environment so that the other two weren’t even in worse shape, and I removed them one by one,” Vehling recalled. The most critical discovery came when she found the third child unconscious and tangled in a buoy rope.
She successfully brought each girl back to safety in shallow water. Emergency services arrived after bystanders contacted 911, and Seattle Fire Department paramedics provided immediate medical care. One of the girls required transport to Seattle Children’s Hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
Recognition for heroism
The same evening, Seafair CEO Emily Cantrell extended a special invitation to Vehling to attend the organization’s official gala. The event became an opportunity to acknowledge her heroic actions.
“We knighted her as ‘Lady Guardian of Lake Washington.’ It was incredible having her at the right place at the right time. What she did was extraordinary,” Cantrell shared.
Despite the praise, Vehling remained humble about her actions. “To save three people, I didn’t think twice about myself. I’m just glad everyone’s safe,” Vehling said.
The 20-year-old’s ability to remain calm and execute the rescue efficiently demonstrates how preparation and presence of mind can make the difference between tragedy and survival. Her training equipped her with the skills needed, but her decisive action in the moment saved three lives.
