When Mike Satterthwaite turned around after putting his son’s bike away in the garage, he noticed something unusual—his 5-year-old boy had disappeared. What happened next became a heartwarming moment of patriotism that would be preserved on camera and touch hearts nationwide.
Preston Satterthwaite had just returned from a bike ride with his father when he wandered to the front of his family’s home instead of following his dad to the garage. The young boy, still dressed in his pajamas and wearing his bike helmet, stopped at the American flag displayed near their doorstep and began reciting the pledge of allegiance.
A ring camera captures an unexpected moment
The entire scene was recorded on the family’s ring doorbell camera, which they had installed following an unfortunate incident. Their previous flag and mounting hardware had been vandalized, prompting the installation of the security device.
“It was kind of ironic that the moment someone pulled it down led to us capturing this great moment,” Mike said.
“I was taking his bike into the garage and thought he was following me,” said Preston’s dad, Mike Satterthwaite. “And as I was putting it (the bike) away, I turn around and noticed he was gone.”
Kindergarten lessons inspire young patriot
Preston’s spontaneous display of patriotism came shortly after learning the pledge in his kindergarten classroom. The young boy expressed his feelings about his country, stating, “The United States is the best country ever.”
For Preston’s parents, Matt and Jessica, witnessing their son’s unprompted act of respect for the flag created an unforgettable family memory. “It was the typical mom pride moment that I’ll never forget,” Jessica said.
