U.S.-Iran Tensions Escalate Over Strategic Waterway and Visa Revocations

During a conversation with NPR’s Rob Schmitz, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott shed light on the administration’s stance and strategies regarding the conflict. President Trump’s remarks about declaring the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory highlight the economic and military measures being utilized to pressure Iran. Pigott emphasized the substantial financial losses Iran faces daily due to U.S. policies, which aim to prevent the regime from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Despite the significant costs incurred by the U.S., including rising gas prices for consumers, Pigott argued that the threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran justifies the ongoing efforts. He cited operations like Midnight Hammer and Epic Fury as evidence of successful actions taken to neutralize Iranian threats.
The conversation also touched on the recent revocation of over 175,000 visas by the Trump administration. According to Pigott, these revocations are attributed to criminal activities such as DUIs, assaults, and thefts, as well as violations of visa conditions. The State Department views each visa as a national security decision, underscoring the importance of border security.
Controversy arose over the inclusion of foreign nationals who celebrated the assassination of American Charlie Kirk. While some might view such expressions as protected speech, Pigott stressed that staying in the U.S. is a privilege rather than a right for visa holders. Actions perceived as undermining national security could lead to visa revocations.
Pigott reiterated the administration’s position that foreigners wishing harm to the U.S. or its citizens are not entitled to remain in the country. The broader visa policies aim to ensure the safety and security of Americans while protecting national interests.
In a clarification from the State Department, the assertion that Iran is losing “hundreds of billions of dollars every single day” was corrected to refer to losses in the “hundreds of millions” per day due to the blockade, with cumulative impacts reaching into the hundreds of billions.
