St Gregory the Great Church in Horfield, Bristol, is set to host an exhibition of a Turin Shroud replica from September 2 to September 12. This replica was showcased earlier this year at Blackburn Cathedral.

The Turin Shroud is traditionally believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, featuring a distinct facial image attributed to him.

The Shroud’s authenticity has been a topic of debate for years. A Brazilian researcher recently described it as a “masterpiece of Christian art”, suggesting it may not be a genuine relic.

Carbon dating places the Shroud’s creation in the Middle Ages, but supporters of its authenticity highlight its detailed and anatomically precise image, which they believe exceeds the capabilities of medieval artists. Further evidence cited includes pollen samples from the Middle East and blood traces resembling those from a crucified person.

Regardless of its authenticity, the replica in Bristol will feature alongside an exhibition and talks hosted by the British Society for the Turin Shroud (BSTS).

The BSTS remains neutral on the Shroud’s authenticity, promoting itself as a “forum” for individuals intrigued by the Shroud’s mysteries.

Exhibition organizer Jo Wilmott expressed, “We are truly honoured and excited to be holding the Turin Shroud Exhibition at St Gregory the Great, Horfield.

“We are an ordinary church in an ordinary but impoverished parish, and we welcome people from our parish, from across Bristol and further afield, to come and visit and learn about one of the most famous religious relics of our time.”

Admission to the exhibition will be free of charge.
