Tragedy Strikes at Big Church Festival: Pastor Killed and Several Injured
In a devastating incident at the Big Church Festival in West Sussex, a 41-year-old pastor, Robert Guanco, lost his life when a large sign fell, causing injuries to several individuals. The event, known as the UK’s largest Christian festival, was underway at Wiston Park near Steyning on Friday afternoon when the tragic accident occurred.
Mr. Guanco, who served at Jesus the Living Water Church in Eastbourne, died at the scene, leaving behind his wife, Isay, and daughter, Ellie. The church community mourns the loss of a man they described as “a faithful servant of God, a loving husband, a devoted father, and a blessing to many.”
Following the incident, six other festival-goers were injured, with four requiring hospitalization. The festival was subsequently canceled, with organizers expressing their devastation and extending their thoughts to the victims, their families, and all who witnessed the event.
Emergency response teams, including Sussex Police, arrived promptly at the scene, with officers called around 15:38 BST. The Health and Safety Executive, alongside local authorities, have been alerted, and an investigation into the incident’s circumstances is ongoing.
Detective Chief Superintendent Richard McDonagh conveyed his condolences, urging anyone with information or footage of the event to come forward. “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who died, and all others who have been affected by this tragic incident,” he stated.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, expressed her sorrow and shock, offering prayers for Mr. Guanco’s family and others affected. Gospel singer CeCe Winans, a headliner at the festival, also extended prayers to everyone impacted by the tragedy.
In support of the Guanco family, a GoFundMe appeal was initiated, successfully raising nearly £50,000, surpassing its £35,000 target. Donations continue to pour in from well-wishers eager to assist the grieving family.
Since its inception in 2009, the Big Church Festival has drawn thousands to celebrate Christian music, worship, and teaching. This year’s festival, however, has been overshadowed by the tragic events, with the investigation into the sign collapse still in progress.
