In recent developments, property magnate Samuel Leeds has pledged to financially support Christian street preachers facing legal challenges in the UK. Leeds expressed his dismay over the perceived bias against Christians, prompted by recent cases of arrested street preachers.
During a conversation with Truth Times, Leeds highlighted the “double standard” Christians encounter, stating his “shock and outrage” over such arrests.
Street preachers have notably been in the spotlight due to legal troubles. For instance, in April, Pastor Steve Maile from Oasis City Church in Watford faced arrest for purported assault and “hate-related public order offences” linked to his comments on Islam and LGBT topics. These assault charges were ultimately dismissed.
Another pastor, Clive Johnston from Northern Ireland, was convicted of violating an abortion clinic’s buffer zone by delivering a sermon based on John 3:16, without mentioning abortion.
In Scotland, Angus Cameron was arrested in 2022 for alleged homophobic remarks. Initially, a police officer acknowledged Cameron’s right to express his views from the Bible, but another officer later arrested him. Cameron was released without charges, successfully expunged the “Non-Crime Hate Incident” from his record, and received £5,500 in compensation along with £9,400 for legal expenses.
Addressing these incidents, Leeds stated, “I am outraged and shocked to see Christians getting arrested on the streets and being told that they’re offensive for preaching about Jesus when we are living in a Christian country.” He further remarked on the growing intolerance towards Christians, “We’re a Christian country that’s tolerant of everybody and every religion – apart from, increasingly, Christians themselves.”
Leeds, who has been outspoken about his Christian beliefs, plans to acquire a disused church in his hometown of Walsall, emphasizing his intent to preserve it rather than profit. He noted, “I’m a Christian. I’m not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. But when you turn your back on God, take His name in vain and openly mock Jesus Christ, which has become so normal in Britain, you cannot then expect everything to continue prospering without consequences.”
