President Trump’s Influence Extends from Coins to Congressional Elections

In a historic move, President Donald Trump has become the first living U.S. president to have his likeness on a coin. This development coincides with his ongoing efforts to reshape Washington, D.C., and impact the upcoming midterm elections.

Donald Trump’s week was marked by two significant events: the release of a coin bearing his image and a Supreme Court decision allowing the continuation of his White House ballroom construction. This ruling proceeded despite Chief Justice John Roberts’ dissent, who argued that the project likely requires congressional approval. NPR’s Ron Elving provided insights into these developments.

The Trump administration is also moving forward with a 250-foot arch project and has plans to replace the Kennedy Center with an outdoor amphitheater. Elving notes that Trump is keen on remaking Washington to reflect his style, expressing urgency in completing these projects due to uncertainty about future administrations’ support.

Amidst construction projects, Trump labeled the conflict with Iran as “small potatoes” and suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself. Meanwhile, fuel prices have surged, with gas exceeding $4 per gallon and diesel nearing $6 per gallon.

Midterm Elections and Trump’s Political Influence

President Trump aims to leave his mark on the midterm elections, despite not being on the ballot. His involvement could either bolster or hinder Republican candidates, depending on their reliance on staunch Trump supporters or independent voters. While candidates often seek presidential support for fundraising and primaries, the president’s sub-40% approval rating might not be advantageous in swing areas.

With the midterms approaching, there remains uncertainty about the electoral process. The Missouri Supreme Court recently invalidated a redrawn state map, an effort by Trump’s party to influence election outcomes. Democrats countered with their maps in California, but overall, the new maps are expected to benefit Trump’s party. However, the current national polling trends suggest that these efforts might not suffice against a strong opposing tide.

The Trump administration’s attempts to complicate voting by mail face judicial challenges. A federal judge reaffirmed her decision against these efforts, which the administration has appealed, making this an issue to watch closely in the coming months.

Gloria Steinem’s Legacy

This week also marked the passing of Gloria Steinem, a pivotal figure in modern feminism. Known for her impactful writing and speeches, Steinem played a crucial role in advancing women’s rights, inspiring numerous women to enter politics and effect change.

NPR senior contributor Ron Elving reflected on her influence: “She was a key driver of the biggest cultural and social empowerment of women since the era of the suffragettes.”
