A theology student searching for direction in Jerusalem never imagined that offering a ride to two hitchhikers would set him on a path to heal thousands of lives in Africa. The remarkable journey of Dr. Bill Rhodes demonstrates how a single conversation can redirect an entire life toward extraordinary purpose.
Fox News analyst Dr. Marc Siegel recently recounted this inspiring story while promoting his book “The Angels Among Us: How God’s Messengers Play a Role in Healing.” The narrative centers on Bill Rhodes, who decades ago found himself in Jerusalem with his wife, studying Biblical Hebrew while wrestling with uncertainty about his future.
A life-changing encounter on the road to Nazareth
During a drive to Nazareth, Rhodes and his wife picked up two hitchhikers, one of whom was a medical student from Britain. When Rhodes inquired about the young man’s motivation for pursuing medicine, the response would prove transformative. The student replied, “I would just like to see if couldn’t alleviate a little bit of suffering in some small corner of the world someday in the name of Jesus.”
Those words struck Rhodes with such force that he made an immediate decision to pursue medicine himself. Despite the challenge of starting medical training later in life, he returned to the United States and completed the rigorous education required to become a board-certified general and plastic surgeon.
Building a surgical center in rural Kenya
Dr. Rhodes relocated his wife and four children to rural western Kenya, where he began serving at Kapsowar Mission Hospital. Over more than twenty years, this Christian medical missionary has performed critical surgeries on patients suffering from severe burns and tumors. His work has elevated the hospital into a significant regional surgical center capable of delivering advanced medical care.
Rhodes and his wife travel throughout Africa to reach patients in isolated areas with no access to modern healthcare facilities. His exceptional service earned him the Gerson L’Chaim Prize from African Mission Healthcare for outstanding Christian medical missionary work. His dedication to this calling extended through his family, as his son also became a surgeon and joined the mission.
According to Dr. Siegel, Rhodes has recently received major humanitarian awards recognizing his selfless dedication to serving communities across Africa.
Divine guidance in unexpected moments
The story parallels the biblical account in Acts chapter 8, where Philip experienced similar divine direction. While Philip was engaged in successful ministry work in Samaria, the Holy Spirit instructed him to leave the bustling city for a deserted road. This seemingly illogical instruction led Philip to encounter an Ethiopian government official reading Isaiah but struggling to understand the text.
Philip approached the chariot and asked if the man understood what he was reading. The official responded, asking how he could unless someone guided him. Philip explained the gospel message using the scripture the man was studying, resulting in his conversion and baptism. That official carried the gospel back to Africa, demonstrating how one act of obedience created far-reaching impact.
Rhodes’ experience mirrors this pattern of divine appointment—a moment of obedience to an unexpected prompting that multiplied into blessing for countless others. His willingness to listen to what he perceived as divine direction through a stranger’s words resulted in healing and hope for thousands of people who would otherwise lack access to surgical care.
“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” – Isaiah 30:21 (NKJV)
