The passing of a notable figure in the Christian community, Eddie Lyle, has been announced by Open Doors UK and Ireland. Lyle, who served as the organisation’s former Chief Executive, died on 19 September at age 73 due to complications from heart surgery, surrounded by his loved ones.
Lyle’s journey began in Northern Ireland, where he embraced Christianity as a young man. His dedication led him to work with ministries such as Youth for Christ and Release International. In 2005, he joined Open Doors UK and Ireland, later becoming the Chief Executive and President. After his leadership role, he continued to contribute as a consultant for Open Doors International.
His commitment to the persecuted church took him to some of the world’s most perilous regions for Christians. Open Doors highlighted Lyle’s inherent ability to inspire through listening, biblical teachings, and storytelling. They noted his relentless effort to connect Christians who shared faith but not freedoms, a mission that led him to places like clandestine churches in Vietnam and refugee camps in Nigeria.
An encounter in India deeply impacted Lyle. He met a young pastor who lacked a personal Bible and resorted to using a worn school notebook for scriptures. This experience prompted Lyle to gift his own annotated Bible to the pastor, reflecting on the pastor’s challenges without a personal copy of the Bible.
Reflecting on Lyle’s legacy, Tiffany Barrans, the current CEO of Open Doors UK and Ireland, stated, “Eddie was so much more than a Chief Executive or President. To many of us, he was a friend and mentor, remembered for his conviction, kindness, wisdom, vision and wonderful sense of humour.” She emphasized the significant influence Lyle had on the ministry’s current state in the UK, Ireland, and globally.
Eddie Lyle is survived by his wife, Christine, and their son, Adam.
