Finding Strength in Faith: Kerry Hasenbalg’s Journey After Tragedy
In the face of unimaginable loss, author Kerry Hasenbalg turned to her faith for the resilience needed to endure one of life’s harshest blows. Her story, marked by the loss of her daughter Isabella before birth, illustrates the profound impact that faith can have in times of deep sorrow.

Back in January 2008, a devastating moment unfolded for Hasenbalg when she realized her daughter had stopped moving inside her womb, just weeks before her expected delivery. On January 6, she faced the heartbreak of delivering a stillborn child on her husband’s birthday.
“When I lost my daughter, Isabella, it really shook the foundations for me,” Hasenbalg shared with The Christian Post. Raised with the teachings of Christianity, she found herself questioning her beliefs, seeking solace in scriptures like Mark 9. Here, a father asks Jesus for help with his own struggles of faith, saying, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.”
This biblical passage resonated deeply with Hasenbalg, who used it as a foundation for healing. She reflected, “I was in that place of going, ‘Lord, I do believe some things, but I need you to help me in all these areas of unbelief.'”
Hasenbalg’s experiences are detailed in her book, The Way of Becoming: 12 Practices for a Thriving Soul, where she hopes to offer encouragement to others facing similar trials. Her insights have become a valuable resource, especially as the 2025 National Day of Prayer approaches.
In anticipation of this annual day, which invites Americans to unite in prayer, a chapter from Hasenbalg’s book is being shared as a resource booklet. This year’s theme, “Pour Out to the God of Hope and Be Filled,” is inspired by Romans 15:13, emphasizing joy and peace through faith.
“I think for me, when I see that verse, I see this divine exchange where we are entrusting the broken places we’re in, and then we’re giving room for the Lord to replace it with joy and peace,” Hasenbalg explained.
With the guidance of her faith, Kerry Hasenbalg not only found a path to healing but also contributed to the National Day of Prayer by co-writing the event’s theme song, “I Will Stand,” alongside Melodee and Juan DeVevo of Casting Crowns.
Hasenbalg’s journey exemplifies how, even in the darkest times, faith can be a wellspring of hope and renewal. Her story is a testament to the healing power of believing in a higher purpose, even when faced with profound loss.
