As October 18 approaches, Christians globally prepare to commemorate St Luke’s Day, a date of special significance this year marking half a millennium since Luke’s Gospel was first printed in English. This milestone invites reflection on St Luke’s contributions to the New Testament and the broader Christian narrative.

Understanding St Luke

St Luke the Evangelist is celebrated as the author of both “The Gospel According to St Luke” and “The Acts of the Apostles.” These works form a substantial portion of the New Testament, with Luke’s writings comprising about 27% of the text, surpassing even St Paul in volume.

Luke’s Background and Influence

Unlike apostles John and Matthew, Luke was not among the twelve. Originating from Antioch in Syria and formerly practicing as a physician, his medical expertise is evident in his detailed accounts of healing, such as Simon’s mother-in-law (Luke 4:38-39) and the man with dropsy (Luke 14:1-4).

Ethnic Origins and Broader Reach

The question of Luke’s ethnicity remains unresolved. Traditionally viewed as a Gentile Christian, some argue his familiarity with Jewish traditions suggests a Hellenistic Jewish background. His Gospel notably extends Jesus’ message beyond Jewish audiences, a theme also present in Acts as Christianity spreads from Jerusalem to Rome.

Theophilus and Luke’s Narrative

Both Luke’s Gospel and Acts are dedicated to Theophilus, described as “Most Excellent,” hinting at a person of high status. While the exact identity of Theophilus is uncertain, some scholars suggest he could be Theophilus ben Ananus, a former High Priest of Jerusalem.

Luke’s Gospel: Unique Elements

Luke’s Gospel, enriched by eyewitness testimonies, includes cherished stories like the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38) and parables such as the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). His narratives emphasize God’s care for the marginalized, portraying Jesus’ outreach to the poor, women, and foreigners.

The Acts of the Apostles: A Second Volume

Luke’s second book, “The Acts of the Apostles,” chronicles the early Church’s expansion through the Holy Spirit’s power. It provides essential context for Paul’s epistles, detailing pivotal events like Pentecost (Acts 2:1-41) and Paul’s missionary journeys (Acts 13-28).

Historical Context and Authorship

The completion date of Luke’s works is debated, with Acts ending around AD 62, prior to Nero’s persecution. Some suggest Luke wrote in Rome circa AD 63 during Paul’s house arrest, while others propose a later composition in Greece or Antioch.

William Tyndale’s Contribution

In 1526, William Tyndale’s English translation of the New Testament, including Luke and Acts, was first printed, introducing enduring phrases like “Glory to God on high” (Luke 2:14) and “Eat, drink and be merry” (Luke 12:19). This translation played a crucial role in shaping modern biblical language.

Celebrating St Luke’s Legacy

St Luke’s Day, observed on October 18, honors the evangelist who is also the patron saint of doctors and healthcare workers. His intent, as conveyed in his Gospel, was “so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (Luke 1:4), a testament to his lasting impact on faith and scripture.
