Welcome to Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, a community where everyone is embraced and encouraged to live as one, in the grace and light of God. This past Sunday, the congregation gathered to reflect on a message that transcends time and challenges us to see beyond scarcity and chaos, embracing the abundant possibilities God offers us.

The sermon centered around the story of the Feeding of the 5000, which is found in all four gospels. In Luke’s account, Jesus and the disciples withdraw to a deserted place after the death of John the Baptist, only to be followed by a crowd eager for Jesus’ teachings and healing. As the day wanes, the disciples suggest sending the crowd away to find food, but Jesus instructs them, “You give them something to eat” (Luke 9:13). From five loaves and two fish, a miracle of abundance unfolds, filling the needs of thousands with leftovers to spare.

In a moment of reflection, the speaker at Preston Hollow shared an enlightening story by Parker Palmer, illustrating how scarcity can transform into abundance through community and shared purpose. On a flight delayed due to a storm, passengers faced the disappointing news of no food on board. Yet, a flight attendant invited everyone to contribute what they had, resulting in a shared meal that nourished both body and spirit.

This narrative parallels the biblical account, emphasizing that the miracle lies not in the multiplication of food but in the transformation of perspective. It’s about recognizing the abundance already present within us and around us, often obscured by chaos and doubt. The sermon encouraged us to see the places of scarcity as opportunities for God to reveal His abundance and to trust that our small offerings can lead to significant impacts when surrendered to divine purpose.

As we step into our daily lives, the call to action is clear: to live this story, to be transformed like the disciples who became fishers of people, and to trust that God uses our gifts for greater purposes. In our shared journey as a community, may we embrace the chaos and scarcity in our lives as the very stages where God works His miracles, transforming us and the world around us.

Let us continue to gather, to share, and to witness the abundance of God’s grace, knowing that each of us has something valuable to contribute to the collective basket of life. As we do, may we find peace, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose in our shared mission to be the body of Christ in the world.
