After more than two decades steering the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS), prominent Southern Baptist leader Daniel Akin has revealed plans to retire. The announcement was made public through a statement on the seminary’s website, marking the end of an influential presidency on July 31, 2026.

Akin, who has held the position of SEBTS president for approximately 21 years, disclosed his retirement timing during a chapel service coinciding with the Board of Trustees’ annual fall meeting at the North Carolina campus.

Reflecting on his decision, Akin shared, “Charlotte and I have prayed this matter through and talked with family and friends. We are convinced the time is right for us and the school.” He added that they are “at perfect peace” with the decision, leaving behind a “healthy and thriving” institution with promising prospects.

Executive Vice President Ryan Hutchinson praised Akin’s tenure, highlighting his contributions to the seminary’s mission. Hutchinson observed, “Early in his leadership our mission statement was simplified,” which fostered a solid foundation for the Great Commission seminary concept. Akin’s guidance has consistently pushed the institution towards its mission, Hutchinson remarked.

Assuming the SEBTS presidency on October 27, 2004, Akin committed to uphold biblical principles, stating at his inauguration, “I pledge to build an institution that will continue to stand on the infallible and inerrant Word of God.” He emphasized SEBTS’s dedication to evangelism, missions, and the exclusivity of the Gospel.

Under Akin’s leadership, SEBTS not only achieved record enrollment figures but also saw unprecedented levels of charitable contributions. His career prior to SEBTS includes teaching roles at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and The Criswell College in Dallas, Texas. Akin also has a rich history in mission work across diverse countries such as Australia, Thailand, and Paraguay.
