At Highland Park Presbyterian Church, the community gathered on a foggy Sunday morning to worship, reflect, and celebrate a day filled with both joy and remembrance. Pastor Callum Lindseay opened the service with an invitation to everyone, whether present in the sanctuary or joining online, to become more involved in the church’s vibrant community. He emphasized the importance of service and the opportunity to connect through initiatives like “Count Me In.”

As the congregation remembered the sudden passing of their beloved senior pastor, Brian, two years ago, Pastor Callum invited them to continue praying for his family. The church honored Brian’s memory, acknowledging the grief of those who have lost loved ones, especially in the past year. In this spirit, a special All Saints Day concert was announced, offering a moment for attendees to light candles in memory of their loved ones.

The service also celebrated the joyous occasion of Bible Sunday, a tradition dear to Pastor Brian. Third graders were presented with their own Bibles, marking a significant step in their spiritual journey. Pastor Charlie Helmouth, sharing his excitement for the day, noted, “The Bible is transformative. It tells us the story of who God is and what he has done for us. It is our final authority for life and godliness.”

Scripture played a central role throughout the sermon. Pastor Charlie encouraged the third graders with verses from Psalm 119, reminding them, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Parents were charged with the words from Deuteronomy 6, to diligently teach their children about God’s commandments.

The sermon drew from 1 Thessalonians and the theme of hope in the face of death. Pastor Bailey Ray addressed the congregation, speaking candidly about the reality of death and the comfort found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. He explained, “When we grieve and when we weep, we do so with a secret weapon, and that is hope.” The message emphasized that because Jesus rose from the dead, believers have the assurance of their own resurrection.

As the service progressed, the congregation was reminded of the importance of being prepared for the return of Jesus, living with intentionality and readiness. Pastor Bailey used the analogy of grocery stores preparing for holidays well in advance to illustrate the importance of being spiritually ready for Jesus’s return, regardless of when it might happen.

The sermon concluded with a call to action, urging the congregation to encourage and support one another, living out their faith in anticipation of Christ’s return. The benediction sent them forth with the blessing of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, to live their lives with purpose and hope.
