International concern grows for American missionary pilot Kevin Rideout, who has reportedly been abducted from his residence in Niamey, Niger’s capital. The incident took place in the city’s secured Château 1 neighborhood, raising alarm among international communities.

Kevin Rideout, 48, is affiliated with Serving In Mission (SIM). Reports from Radio France Internationale indicate that three men kidnapped him near the Bravia Hotel, not far from the presidential palace.

The U.S. State Department in Niamey confirmed they are actively working on Rideout’s safe release. A department spokesperson told CBS News, “It is a top priority for the Trump Administration to look after the safety of every American, and we are seeing efforts from across the U.S. government to support the recovery and safe return of this U.S. citizen.”

Amidst current political instability following a coup d’etat on July 26, 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Niamey issued a security alert, cautioning Americans about the “heightened risk of kidnapping” in Niger. The advisory also mentioned modified security measures, including mandatory use of armored vehicles for U.S. personnel and restricted movements.

SIM could not comment immediately on the situation. Kevin and his brother Ian have been pilots for the organization, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, as per a 2014 article from The Wellesley Townsman. Their work involves supporting humanitarian efforts like drilling wells, aiding refugees, and assisting in educational and reforestation initiatives.

Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, appealed to his followers for prayers for Rideout’s safe return. “The State Department said it is a top priority of the Trump Administration to look after the safety of every American, and they are supporting his recovery and safe return,” Graham posted on Facebook.

Gomer Williams, a friend of Rideout, also urged the public to pray. “When it hits home, it hits a little differently. Kevin Rideout, the missionary that was kidnapped in Niger this week, is a friend of mine,” Williams wrote. He called for prayers for Rideout’s comfort, strength, and opportunities to share his faith with his captors.

U.S. Rep. Mark Harris of North Carolina also called for prayers for Rideout. “Pray that he is rescued. Pray for his family’s strength. Pray that peace is with him in this unimaginable situation,” Harris stated in a post on X.
