His recounting has faced harsh criticism and mockery, with commentators like Dinesh D’Souza voicing skepticism. D’Souza questioned the story’s authenticity, suggesting possible mental illness or an encounter with his dogs. He took to social media, posting: “Maybe a demon really attacked him, in which case WHERE’S THE DEMON NOW?”

However, there are voices defending Carlson’s account. Author Rod Dreher, although critical of Carlson for other reasons, stated that Carlson had shared the story privately long before going public, implying no apparent benefit for Carlson in fabricating such a story.
