When Officer Ronald Hook received a dispatch call about unusual activity in a Walmart parking lot, nothing could have prepared him for what he was about to encounter. The Alliance Police Department officer found himself face-to-face with a real-life cowboy atop a massive white bull, turning what started as a suspicious activity report into an unforgettable moment.
The incident unfolded on November 7, 2025, when dispatch informed Officer Hook about a “male with cowboy hat riding a whitish bull up and down the parking lot” near the local Walmart. The description seemed so unusual that the officer needed confirmation, asking dispatch, “If I’m reading this right, is he riding like an actual real bull?”
Meeting Gus the famous bull
Upon arrival at the scene, Officer Hook’s skepticism turned to amazement. The report was accurate—a cowboy was indeed sitting atop a white bull in the parking lot. “I have so many questions,” Officer Hook told the cowboy as he approached.
The cowboy quickly put the officer’s concerns to rest by introducing his companion. The bull’s name was Gus, and according to his rider, Gus had achieved celebrity status. The duo wasn’t causing trouble; they were simply passing through Alliance on their way to perform at a rodeo scheduled for that weekend at Garwood Arena in Columbiana County.
An unexpected photo opportunity
Officer Hook’s body camera recorded the entire encounter, capturing the officer’s genuine curiosity and good humor. After asking “Can I pet Gus?” and receiving permission from the cowboy, Hook went a step further and climbed onto the bull himself for a memorable photograph. Throughout the encounter, he repeated his amazement, saying, “I have so many questions.”
No citations were issued during the encounter. Instead, Officer Hook chose to embrace the unexpected moment. The Alliance Police Department later posted the amusing body camera footage on Facebook, where it quickly gained traction and brought smiles to viewers nationwide.
