In a move that further alters the landscape of U.S. immigration policy, President Donald Trump announced the termination of temporary legal protections for Somali migrants residing in Minnesota. The decision, shared on Friday night, marks another step in the administration’s ongoing efforts to curtail programs designed to limit deportation.

With Minnesota home to the largest Somali community in the United States, the implications of this decision are significant. Many in this community fled the protracted civil conflict in Somalia, attracted by Minnesota’s inclusive social initiatives. However, the immediate impact might be limited in scope. A recent congressional report revealed that only about 705 Somalis nationwide benefit from the Temporary Protective Status (TPS) program.

Established by Congress in 1990, TPS aims to shield individuals from deportation to countries experiencing natural calamities, civil unrest, or other dangerous conditions. This safeguard can be extended by the Homeland Security Secretary for 18 months at a time.

Trump conveyed his decision via social media, alleging that Minnesota is rife with fraudulent financial activities. He stated, “Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great State, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER!”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Minnesota chapter expressed strong disapproval, noting the decision would “tear families apart.” Executive Director Jaylani Hussein remarked, “This is not just a bureaucratic change; it is a political attack on the Somali and Muslim community driven by Islamophobic and hateful rhetoric.”

Since his campaign to reclaim the presidency, Trump has pledged to deport millions, and his administration has been active in revoking protections that permitted immigrants to legally remain and work in the U.S. Recently, this included rescinding TPS for 600,000 Venezuelans and 500,000 Haitians, protections initially granted during President Joe Biden’s term. Additionally, efforts have been made to limit similar protections for migrants from Cuba and Syria, among other nations.
