In a striking illustration of religious tensions in India, extremist Hindu nationalists recently demonstrated an alarming level of hostility towards Christianity, as evidenced by a controversial burial incident in Chhattisgarh. The ordeal highlights ongoing challenges for Christians in the region.

The incident involved a Christian man who passed away on November 5th in Kodekhursi, a village located in Kanker District. Despite his lifelong ties to the area, local Hindu nationalists barred the burial of the deceased on his own family property, as reported by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW).

The refusal by local Hindus to allow the burial prompted a significant confrontation. The police, when approached, did not intervene, leaving the Christian community no choice but to place the deceased’s body outside the police station in protest.

The authorities suggested relocating the burial to another town, Charama, which the Christian community decided to pursue. However, tensions escalated further when the funeral procession, under police protection, was pursued by Hindu activists for nearly a kilometer before finally being dispersed.

Ultimately, due to persistent threats, the family was forced to travel almost 200 kilometers to the state capital, Raipur, to conduct the burial safely.

CSW Founder President Mervyn Thomas has urged an investigation into the incident. He stated, “No family should ever be subjected to such humiliation and danger while carrying out a sacred final rite.”

Thomas further emphasized the need for state authorities to address what he described as a “troubling pattern” of neglect regarding the rights of tribal Christian citizens. “We call on the state authorities to conduct an impartial enquiry into the matter and take concrete measures to safeguard the constitutional freedom of all communities, ensuring that no one is denied the basic dignity of burying their loved ones,” he added.
