Student Podcasters Gear Up for 2026 NPR Challenge
The NPR Student Podcast Challenge returns in 2026, inviting students nationwide to share their stories through podcasting. This year presents an exciting twist with an added special prize to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Participants are encouraged to create podcasts that delve into the meaning of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” This special challenge aims to inspire stories that reflect on historical events, explore American identity, and highlight themes such as innovation, rights, and cultural engagement.
The competition remains open to all topics, awarding grand prizes in general categories for middle school (grades 5-8) and high school (grades 9-12) entries. The fourth-grade competition, introduced in 2024, also continues this year.
The 2026 Student Podcast Challenge opens on January 5 and closes on June 5. However, entries for the America 250 prize must be submitted by May 1. Submissions can be made here.
Winners of the America 250 prize will be announced in June, in time for Fourth of July celebrations. The best stories will be showcased on NPR’s Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and other platforms.
Podcasting Guidelines and Submission Details
Podcasts must adhere to key rules, including a duration of three to eight minutes. Importantly, entries should be the original work of students, free of adult production or editing. Additionally, podcasts must avoid offensive language and adhere to strict guidelines regarding music copyright.
Submissions require collaboration with an adult (18+) who will complete the entry form. Detailed rules are available here.
Inspiring Past Entries
Past entries have explored diverse topics, including a fifth-grader’s interview with a Japanese incarceration camp survivor, narratives of cultural transition, and community responses to the Palisades Fire.
The competition has also featured podcasts on pop culture, history, music, and even mythical creatures like Bigfoot.
